Thinking tool. Visual Thesaurus.

The subject of a recent business leaders meeting: The importance of finding out the “why” from our customers instead of the “what”. Curious marketing beans always ask lots of questions to get closer to the true why, so I clicked on one of my favorite mind-mapping tools, the Visual Thesaurus, to ask it: “why, ask why”?

For us, answering the “why” lets us operate at our most powerful, strategic, design thinking to reach the goal or desired result.

Keeping employees engaged

BP is going the extra mile providing Wellness Programs to keep employees engaged in healthier lifestyles. This 13-month calendar/planner was mailed to the homes of employees along with a message of how they can do their part and commit to better health in 2011.

This year, the chat bubble (a campaign graphic) becomes part of the pictures we illustrated. The “I can” theme helps an employee to visualize being in the picture; not just talking about it. The “I can” becomes an “icon”.

Doing their part to create the BP Wellness Calendar: Terry Teutsch: illustration, Richard Laurence Baron of Signalwriter: words. Janelle Ewing and Bonnie Hargett for allowing us to be a part of the strategy for better personal and corporate wellness at BP America.

Communicating Wellness – can be ugly

This BP wellness calendar was designed and written to speak about real health issues – not pretty them up. It features daily issues like putting off exercise, stress at work or not taking care of your body. The “get around to it” theme is easy for folks to relate to everyday. The chat bubbles say things we “think” or “would say” – with a little fun thrown in.

Even designing a wellness calendar takes many helping hands (or beans) to make the concept succeed. Let me first thank the “voice” Richard L. Baron, Signalwriter, and Janelle Ewing, who is Manager of Benefits Communication at BP America; and seconded by Bonnie Hargett, BP Benefits Communication Consultant. Kudos to Prism’s Design Director, Terry Teutsch, for creating a fun and inspiring calendar.

We set out to design a calendar that we had never seen before; that was not generic sounding or “just pretty” in look. We accomplished this and more… Award of Excellence at Houston’s IABC 2010 Bronze Quill Awards.

Every girl wants a new do!

Today is the day! Time for a new hairdo. Something fresh, contemporary, inspirational, reflective of the times, yet respectful of tradition. So, when Gamma Phi Beta decided to update their Foundation brand, the appointment was made. All it took was a collaboration of shampoo, conditioner, a clip here and a clip there, a touch of color and a final blow-dry. Oh! how a new hairdo makes you feel. A renewed spirit and soul. In this case less is more, as there was no need for an overhaul, but to simply refresh what was fundamentally good.
